Bathinda: Accepting the assurances of streamlining the paddy procurement and lifting process in next two days, the protesting farmers vacated the highways Sunday evening but announced to continue with the protests at the roadsides. The farmers also announced taking strong measures if there was no marked improvement in the procurement and lifting process in coming days. The leaders of the farmer forums agreed to vacate the highways after assurances from food supplies minister Lal Chand Kataruchak and agriculture minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian.Farmer bodies Kisan Mazdoor Morcha and SKM (Non-Political) earlier continued with protests on Day 2 at Dagru village in Moga on the Ludhiana-Ferozepur highway, at Badrukhan on the Bathinda-Zirakpur highway, at Phagwara and Sathiala bridge on the Gurdaspur-Tanda highway and at Jassi Pau Wali village situated on the Bathinda-Mansa roadBangalore Wealth Management. The commuters had to face lots of inconvenience due to the blockade at Bathinda-Mansa road. Kisan Mazdoor Morcha leader Sarvan Singh Pandher said: “Both central and state govts have proved to be anti-farmer as they did not do much to streamline the procurement and lifting even after 27 days of the official start of the paddy procurement.” “As per data provided by the authorities, 49 lakh MT paddy has arrived in the mandis and only 19 LMT has been lifted while 30 LMT is still lying in the mandis, either procured or some part of it yet to be procured,” Pandher added.He said the ministers had assured them of compensating those farmers whose crop had been purchased by the arhtiyas at a price lower than the MSP due to excess moisture contentGuoabong Investment. Pandher also said agreements with 3,850 rice millers had been signed for custom milling of rice. Apart from this, due to shortage of the DAP the farmers may have to face hardships in wheat sowing, said the farmer leader. The action being taken against the farmers by registering a large number of FIRs and imposing environmental compensation upon burning stubble is intolerable, he said, adding that the state govt should stand by the farmers as they were forced to burn the paddy stubble in absence of tractors and money to pay for diesel. The govt should provide tractors and diesel to manage crop residue in the fields, said Pandher.
